Emotional Focused Family Therapy
EFFT (Emotional Focused Family Therapy)
This therapy strives to create a feeling of trust, respect, and communication between members of a family. In order to resolve issues and share honest feelings, all family members should feel emotionally secure. Each member of the family should feel that they are raising a valid point and feel that they are being heard so that the family can resolve issues and build strong relationships between the members of that family.
EFFT is based on our steadfast belief in the major influence that our families have on all of us. The family can be the best example of unconditional love and can be a source of stability for an individual. A therapist, therefore, serves to provide family members and caregivers with the ability to master the skills, behaviours, and mindset, in the following areas:
- Be an emotional coach: Support your beloved family member so that they can approach, process and manage stress, and give them the ability to manage the symptoms of emotional pain.
- Be a behavioural coach: Assist beloved family members in the interruption of symptoms associated with unhealthy behaviours and also in transitions from difficult events in their lives.
- Apologize: Apologizing is therapeutic for both individuals. This allows your beloved family member to let go of, and to recover from, any injurious associations with you from their past.
- Work through your barriers: This is not easy for the family member providing care. This is a challenging and novel journey, and an enormous leap for the family member providing care.
Emotionally focused family therapy was developed along with the science of adult attachment, a theory developed in the 1980s by Drs. Adele Lafrance Robinson and Johanne Dolhanty, that focuses on personality and intimate relationships. It has expanded our understanding of mental health and the bonds that exist between family members.
Regardless of the family member’s level of commitment to treatment, a parent or caregiver can learn these skills and take on these roles. Although family involvement is preferable whenever possible, if individuals are not able to include parents or caregivers, the same goals can be achieved with individuals using “emotion-focused therapy.”
Can EFFT Help?
Emotion-focused family therapy is influenced by the theory of interpersonal neurobiology. It is focused on the support of caregivers so that they can increase their role in the recovery of their loved ones from mental health issues.
The most therapeutic effect worldwide is the empowerment of parents to help their children, regardless of their age. As is said, parenting does not come with a handbook. Our goal with our emotionally focused family therapy is to help create feelings of safety, respect for one another, and an understanding of the other family member’s position. When families attend therapy together, they learn to communicate with one another.
If the relationships in your family are either hostile or non-communicative, or there are unresolved issues, your family may need to learn how to communicate with each other and develop supportive behaviour.
At Gaia Counselling, we make sure that we are not just qualified academically and have years of experience in psychotherapy, but we are also trained in emotionally focused family therapy.
